On this day in 1864, the first of General Sherman's troops arrived in Milledgeville during the March to the Sea. Sherman himself would arrive the following day and make his headquarters at The Governor's Mansion. He would spend one night in the mansion and continue on towards Savannah the next morning. Governor Brown and his family left the mansion and took with them all of the furnishings before Sherman or his troops arrived in town. . .. ... #onthisday #OTD #sherman #civilwar #marchtothesea #georgiahistory #mansion #milledgeville #milledgevillega

"Volunteers bring Christmas cheer to Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion" from @georgiacollege Hundreds of volunteers are taking shifts at Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion – hanging 500 ornaments on a 30-foot tree, adding bows and pinecones to 24 wreaths and making all 18 rooms sparkle with the warm glow of a Victorian Christmas. “It’s all hands on deck,” said Matt Davis, director of the mansion. “Every segment of our community has a hand in this in some form or another – real community teamwork. So it’s a really good time of the year to be here.” It takes 200 volunteers two weeks to transform the 1839 Mansion into a showcase of the season. Georgia College faculty, staff and 50 students work alongside numerous community members to get it ready for thousands of visitors who’ll come to see its bright lights and holiday cheer. Sophomore early childhood education major Madison Horton of Milledgeville hangs ornaments of pine cones, burlap bows and tufted cotton. Retired botany professor, Dr. Harriett Whipple, has been decorating the Mansion for Christmas since the 1980s, when college presidents still used the museum as their residence. She brings her students to the Mansion every year for community service. Students from the integrated science and education course learn to merge history and botany in their future classrooms. This year, Whipple’s teaching students how to make Williamsburg wreaths that will grace the Mansion’s exterior. “It’s fun. It gives us a dose of history,” said sophomore early childhood education major Ragan Smoak of Fayetteville. “I’m happy. I always wanted to be in the Mansion, especially at Christmas time.” . .. ... #milledgevillega #milledgeville #georgia #georgiacollege #gcsu #christmas #christmastree #mansion #historichouse #housemuseum #museum #exploregeorgia #gaogm

During the Mansion’s restoration, specialists diligently worked to restore the building’s interior spaces. We hope that you will enjoy this photo showing the installation of the recreated cornice in the Mansion’s saloon. Conservators used molds taken from the building’s surviving cornices to accurately recreate the lost historic fabric from the room.
